The adapter supports features such as IPv4/IPv6 packet Checksum Offload Engine (COE) and TCP large send offload to reduce the load on your CPU. Jumbo

Primarily high-speed network interfaces including Gigabit Ethernet NICs. Checksum offloading is usually beneficial as it allows the checksum to be calculated (outgoing) or verified (incoming) in hardware at a much faster rate than it could be handled in software. Enable multi queue processing APU routers have very performant Intel and Network Interfaces. Disable hardware checksum offloading, which is checked by default, controls if user-configurable checksum offloading might be handled by the network card.

The interface for offloading a transmit checksum to a device is explained in detail to deduce these itself in hardware (as some NICs do) the driver should check

The network driver won’t calculate the checksum itself but will simply hand over an empty (zero or garbage filled) checksum field to the hardware. In addition to the OS level TCP offloading options, Network Adapter drivers have some of those, like "Checksum offload" and "Large Send Offload (LSO)" as well. Even if offloading is turned off at the OS level, the NIC driver can still use its own variant of offloading, check the driver properties as well! In Network->Interfaces there's an option to Disable Hardware Offloading which says, "Turn off hardware offloading for network traffic processing.

net.inet.udp.checksum should be set to 1. Disable hardware checksum offloading, which is checked by default, controls if user-configurable checksum offloading might be handled by the network card. Not all technologies support this (IPS for example) and some drivers have issues when enabled. We generally advise to keep this disabled, the performance gain is debatable as well. Offloading is used to execute functions of the router using the hardware directly, instead of a process of software functions.

Hardware checksum offloading

Typical symptoms of broken checksum offloading include corrupted packets and poor throughput performance. Checksum offloading eliminates host-side checksumming overheads by performing checksum computation with hardware assist in the NIC. TCP/IP checksum offloading is supported by Myricom's recently released LANai-5 adapter, and by other high-speed network interfaces including Alteon's Gigabit Ethernet NICs based on the Tigon-II chipset. Hardware offloading feature may have bugs but they are generally beneficial. I only deactivate them on certain NICs or vendors which do have problems.

It is noticed that, Checksum Offload improves throughput; Checksum Offload improves CPU utilization Supporting network protocols at high speeds in pure software is getting increasingly difficult, with 25-100Gb/s interfaces available now and 200-400Gb/s starting to show up. Packet processing at 100Gb/s must happen in 200 cycles or less, which does not leave much room for processing at the operating-system level. Fortunately some operations can be performed by hardware, including checksum Checksum offloading often causes confusion as the network packets to be transmitted are handed over to Wireshark before the checksums are actually calculated. Wireshark gets these "empty" checksums and displays them as invalid, even though the packets will contain valid checksums when they leave the network hardware later.

Turn off the checksum offloading in the network driver, if this option is available. Turn off checksum validation of the specific protocol in the Wireshark preferences. Recent releases of Wireshark disable checksum validation by default due to the prevalance of offloading in modern hardware and operating systems.

In addition to the OS level TCP offloading options, Network Adapter drivers have some of those, like "Checksum offload" and "Large Send Offload (LSO)" as well. In Network->Interfaces there's an option to Disable Hardware Offloading which says, "Turn off hardware offloading for network traffic processing. WARNING: disabling hardware offloading can reduce network performance. Disabling hardware offloading is only recommended when the interface is managing jails, plugins, or virtual machines."
